I know its pretty much end of year but I need clarification for next year because I got two different rulings from two different monitors.

When trying to get a force out on the base. For this example we'll just use throwing somoene out at first. If the throw is low and the 1st basemen stops the ball with both hands on the ground does that count? I had one Monitor tell me the ball has to be off the ground for it to count and another told me as long as the ball is stopped it counts.

Was just frustrating because both calls were on the negative side for my teams. I spose I could just chalking it up to not being a likeable guy.. heh.

the person catching that ball needs to have control of the ball. not just stop it. I would say two hands on the ball, not trapping it, would be control even if it was touching the ground.

unfortunately it is a judgment call by the ump if the person has control or not. the ground has nothing to do with it.

Using MLB as a reference, the ball would have to be off the ground.

Since I wrote the rules and am a monitor, I can verify that the ball has to be off the ground. If it's on the ground, even if the 1st baseman has two hands on it, it's a trap.

Doesn't it say in the rules, "The player must have possession and make a kickball like move."?

Ah good to know. I had this come up two weeks ago and it may have been me who called the player out. I thought it was control of the ball, I am now corrected and better for it.

Wrong...as long as the defensive player gains control of the ball, regardless if it's touching the ground or not, and has a part of his/her body touching the base, the baserunner should be called out, given control is had before runner touches base.

I've always gone with Control of the ball. We're not playing with MLB rules or softball rules. They're close, but not the same. It is a bit of a judgement call, but it's not that hard to tell when a kickball is under control.

I agree with Cap. If he were to be firmly controling it, with his mangina around the ball, yet touching the ground, the runner is out.

i think this is debatable and football move needs to come into play. pinning the ball against the ground on a catch is not a catch so should the ball pinned to the ground be considered possession? i think you need at least clearance of Ray Rays vert. good question and i think we need a thread of more of these for clarification and more uniform calls.

So if first baseman has one hand on the ball (or even 2), completely stretched out, ball stopped moving is in his control, yet in this scenario he would not be able to pick the ball up off the ground, for whatever reason, runner is out?

Leraw,

This is the exact scenario that played out in the Team America vs. Undies game that lead to the "Tools" thread..

Ian caught a ball at third but as he came down with the force out catch, be brought the ball all the way down to the ground and it touched the dirt and he held it there. I called the runner safe..

That's different, he caught the ball then bought it down, but according to Cap that runner should be out, thus I was wondering about my scenario say on a low throw.

You should just deflect your throw off the fence and hit the runner so this won't be an issue.

I do think the baseman catching the ball should have to make the catch off the ground.. Thats my two cents.

To be honest, I have probably called it more based on control or no control with the aid of the ground in most cases but its a good question to ask and i think makes the call less subjective perhaps?
